Dear All,

Thank you all for supporting the “Protect Our Earth, Protect Our Children (PROTEC)” Campaign which was sanctioned by all the Archbishops and Bishops of Malaysia in 2020 and coordinated by the Episcopal Commission for Creation Justice. We are now entering into the fifth year of the Campaign, PROTEC Year 5, from 1 Sept 2024 – 31 Aug 2025, with the theme: Use Less Paper and Wood.

We are losing about 10 million hectares of precious forests every year. Deforestation is a key contributor to global warming and loss of biodiversity. It also threatens the food and livelihood security of some 1.6 billion people who live in or around forests.

About 42 million trees are cut down daily for paper and other products. One thing everyone can do is to reduce their consumption of paper and wood to save our forests, which are God’s gift to us.
Bishop Joseph Hii, President of the Episcopal Commission for Creation Justice of Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei, has issued a letter urging all dioceses to celebrate PROTEC Year 5 and the Season of Creation 2024 in the spirit of Laudato Si’.

❖    The theme for PROTEC Campaign Year 5 (1 Sept 2024 – 31 Aug 2025) is:
Use Less Paper and Wood.
Please promote this campaign in all your parishes and communities. This theme runs for ONE YEAR from 1 Sept. 2024 to 31 Aug 2025.

❖    The theme for the 2024 Season of Creation (SOC) (1 Sept to 4 Oct 2024) is:   “To hope and act with creation”
The annual Season of Creation runs from 1 September (World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation) to 4 October, the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi. The theme for this year is from Romans 8:19-25. We are reminded that “22For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope, we were saved.”

Best regards,
Bishop's Office
